About the Role

We are looking to appoint an exceptional candidate to the post of Teacher of English for our new and expanding 4-19 free school. Teachers in the early stage of their career would benefit from the wealth of experience and talent amongst the teachers in English, which is one of the outstanding departments of our school, and Newly Qualified Teachers are welcome to apply.

Our ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted judgement (June 2015) was only the start of the story. The challenge is to sustain and embed this excellence through every aspect of Gildredge House as it grows to full capacity in 2018/19.

As Teacher of English you will join an outstanding team of inspirational teachers and ensure that our students enjoy and achieve highly in their English learning. You will be an English specialist in the secondary phase and either will already have experience in, or be prepared to take on the professional development necessary for, teaching this subject to A Level.

Our school motto is ‘Aspire’ and to that end the English department follows a Vygotskyian approach, which is driven by the simple view that students who enjoy the subject will engage in it, grow in confidence and will have the opportunity to excel. We believe that children are not empty vessels to be filled with some out-dated wisdom but rather energetic and voracious learners who wish to explore the world through language and ideas. Our focus, therefore, is on providing learning opportunities that give students the chance to study what interests them, to grow in confidence in their use of the relevant skills and, above all, to have the courage to get it wrong: all of which will mean our students are prepared for the world yet to come rather than a world which has long since passed.

In September 2015, Gildredge House opened its Sixth Form and immediately attracted a number of students to study English Literature at A Level. We have once again attracted a cohort of A Level English Literature students for September 2016. This, coupled with the fact that our pioneer secondary students this year reach Year 10, means that we need strong A Level and GCSE teachers. If you have the ability to teach your subject(s) to A Level and GCSE, you will immediately find yourself engaged with talented, hard-working and committed students with a desire to take their learning to the highest level. As an all-through school, our teachers also have the opportunity to engage with and enhance the primary English curriculum. If you have additional experience in this phase of education, we are keen to hear from you.

Do you want to be part of a school where your contribution is valued and celebrated?

Would you like to teach children with high aspirations who are keen to learn?

Do you want to join a staff team that is diverse, collegiate and respected?

Gildredge House offers:

Continuity of education for boys and girls aged 4-19

An expectation of high academic standards leading to Sixth Form studies

Small class sizes

Strong discipline

Excellent pastoral care

An extended school day for older students

Supervised prep

A broad range of extra-curricular activities

Parent and community involvement

Our school motto: 'Aspire'.
