About the Role
We are looking to appoint an exceptional candidate to the post of Teacher of Philosophy and Belief (Religious Studies) for our new and expanding 4-19 free school. Teachers in the early stage of their career would benefit from the wealth of experience and talent amongst the teachers in the Humanities Department, which is one of the outstanding departments of our school, and Newly Qualified Teachers are welcome to apply.
Our ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted judgement (June 2015) was only the start of the story. The challenge is to sustain and embed this excellence through every aspect of Gildredge House as it grows to full capacity in 2018/19.
As Teacher of Philosophy and Belief you will join a strong team of inspirational teachers and ensure that our students enjoy and achieve highly in their Humanities learning. You will be a Philosophy and Belief / Religious Studies specialist in the secondary phase and ideally you can teach Philosophy to A Level or Pre-U. If you possess the skills and enthusiasm for teaching another Humanities subject, such as Politics or Sociology, or if you have primary phase teaching experience, we are particularly keen to hear from you, as we seek to develop our all-through Humanities provision.
As the name suggests, the subject of Philosophy and Belief involves Religious Studies coupled with the study of Philosophy. Through these subjects we encourage our students’ critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities, whilst developing their spiritual, cultural and ethical awareness. From the earliest point in Year 7, our students enjoy debating some of the ultimate questions concerning life, the universe and everything, and engaging with philosophers such as Plato and Descartes. In our recent inspection Ofsted recognised the progress made by our students in their abstract and conceptual understanding through the study of Philosophy and Belief, as well as their willingness to engage with challenging topics.
All Gildredge House all students study the discrete subjects of History, Geography and Philosophy and Belief in Years 7 and 8 and have the opportunity of taking these Humanities subjects through to GCSE and eventually A Level. All students are expected to follow short-course Religious Studies (Philosophy and Ethics) to GCSE. At the Post 16 Level our students follow the CIE Philosophy and Theology Pre-U two year linear course. We feel that this course allows our students to develop a broader subject knowledge and enables them to take a more synoptic approach with their learning.
In the Sixth Form, students additionally have the opportunity to commence A Level courses in Politics, Psychology and Sociology. All of these, whilst subject areas in their own right, are part of the Humanities Department at the school. Once the school is full, the Humanities will be a large Faculty of related subjects.
