About the Role

TEACHER OF MFL - FRENCH

0.5 FTE / Full year / Permanent

Required for September 2016, a good part-time teacher of French, capable of teaching to GCSE. The successful candidate would be joining a very strong MFL department within a high achieving school. The ability to teach Spanish would be a bonus but not essential.

The successful candidates will be joining a high achieving school with a high profile commitment to training and career development. At the core of our values is supporting students so that they can achieve their best. The department is looking at fostering closer links with schools abroad and will be looking at incorporating new technologies such as skyping or e-twinning projects into its scheme of learning to motivate students and make the learning of languages even more relevant to them. The successful candidates will be prepared to go the extra mile, will be keen to work as part of a team, and be open to, and willing to share, new ideas.

The MFL department currently offers French at Key Stages 3 and 4 and Spanish at KS4. Two students are studying Spanish at GCSE level after school and will be taking their exams in May 2016. Spanish will be introduced formally as a GCSE in KS4 from September 2016.

In Years 7, 8 and 9 students are set according to ability and follow the Studio,1 2 and 3 text books respectively. We also use Activelearn and Vocabexpress to support learning outside school.

Lessons are one hour in length and are distributed over a two-week cycle. Our current time allocation is five lessons a fortnight.

At Key Stage 4, the Edexcel linear course is followed for French but we are looking at using the new AQA syllabus from next year. The dedicated textbooks for French are Métropolitan Rouge or Vert. We also enjoy the benefits of a Foreign Language Assistant.

We have three specialist teaching rooms, all equipped with interactive whiteboards. The department has established a successful policy of collaborative planning, incorporating the use of ICT through lessons based on PowerPoint presentations, and subscriptions to websites.

The department regularly organises trips to France, including to Paris and to the Christmas market at Lille.

Willingdon Community School is a high-achieving and over-subscribed (NOR 1000), 11-16, comprehensive school serving the Eastbourne area. In addition 34% of all results were at A*/A grades with 42% of students achieving 3 or more A*/A grades. As far as Modern languages are concerned, students achieved 85% A* to C with 25% of them achieving A* to A.
