About the Role

The South Downs Community Special School is seeking to appoint classroom based teaching assistants to undertake learning support duties and assist the class teacher in the day to day needs of the pupils. Teaching Assistants are also expected to support the teacher with the delivery of the curriculum and respond to the pupils’ needs enabling them to make rapid progress. These are fixed term posts until 22nd July 2016, term time only for 30 hours per week.

The South Downs Community Special School is a large outstanding primary special school for children with a wide range of educational special needs. We educate children between the ages of 3 and 11 years old on two sites. The West Site is in Beechy Avenue (the Old Town area) and accommodates our younger pupils and the East Site is in Shinewater Lane (The Langney Area) and accommodates our older pupils. The school is federated with The Lindfield Special School also in Eastbourne.  The Lindfield Special School educates secondary age pupils between 11 and 17.

This post is initially required for The South Downs Community Special School, however, candidates should be aware they may be required to work on any one of the Federation’s four sites.

This post is covered by the Childcare Disqualification Regulations 2009.

The school will need to ensure that they are not knowingly employing a person who is disqualified under the 2009 Regulations in connection with relevant childcare provision.  Accordingly, the successful candidate will be required to demonstrate to the school, bycompleting a self-declaration form as part of the pre-employment checks process, that they have not been disqualified under the 2009 Regulations.

If the preferred candidate is found to be disqualified under the 2009 Regulations, the offer of employment will be subject to the application by the preferred candidate to Ofsted for a waiver and the receipt of a waiver from Ofsted.

Additional Information

Work Permits: we may be able to obtain a Work Permit for this post but this is subject to meeting the requirements of the UK Border Agency’s Points-based Immigration System.

From 6 April 2011 the Home Office has placed a permanent restriction on the number of migrant workers that all Tier 2 (General) Sponsors can recruit. Due to the restrictions we cannot guarantee that individuals that meet the requirements of the Points-based Immigration System will be issued with clearance to obtain work permits.   This authority is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. All staff will be expected to hold or be willing to obtain Enhanced DBS check or Enhanced check for Regulated Activity with the Disclosure & Barring Services (previously the Criminal Records Bureau).
