About the Role

Part time (0.4) / Full year / Permanent MPS-UPS 22,467 – 38,250 per annum (pro rata)

Required for September 2017, a high quality teacher of Science to join a successful and experienced team within this high achieving school.  This high attaining department is looking for either experienced or newly qualified teachers with a passion for Science and a commitment to the success of all pupils. The ability to teach across KS3&4 is essential.

The Science team at Willingdon currently consists of eight full time and two part-time teachers. They are supported by a team of two full-time and three part-time Science Technicians.

In Years 7 and 8, students follow an adaptation of the Hodder Science Progress, Dynamic Learning Scheme of Work. Students are taught biology, chemistry and physics modules, each module lasting for approximately eight lessons. Knowledge and skills acquired by students are assessed at the end of each module. The aim of this course is to introduce students to the ideas covered at KS4 and provide them with the essential prior knowledge required to embark on the GCSE curriculum.

In Years 9, 10 and 11 all students work towards completing biology, chemistry and physics GCSEs. Each class currently has one teacher to deliver all of the specialisms. The modular approach started at KS3 is continued into KS4 and modules from each specialism are taught in rotation. Students record lesson notes and assessments in their exercise books. Required practical work is written up separately and stored in a folder which is kept at school. At the end of each module, students sit a summative assessment which generates an attainment grade for that module.

The Science department works closely with other schools including Causeway, Stone Cross, and Pevensey and Westham. We organise a ‘Washday Challenge’ event in July for year 5 students from local primary feeder schools. We also send teams of Science teachers and technicians to deliver fun and engaging activities to help primary school inspire their students.

Willingdon Community School is a high-achieving and over-subscribed (NOR 1000), 11-16, comprehensive school serving the Eastbourne area.  The school is committed to providing the opportunity for success, in its broadest sense, to all its students, taking pride in not just their academic achievement but in the qualities that make them successful citizens.  Examination results at GCSE are consistently high with students of all abilities making good progress and adding significant value, regardless of their starting point.  In 2016 60% of students achieved 5 or more passes at grades A*-C including English and Maths and 95% of all students achieved 5 or more at A* – G including English and Maths.  In addition 34% of all results were at A*/A grades with 42% of students achieving 3 or more A*/A grades. In 2016, 72% of students gained A*-C grades in two or more Science GCSEs.

Willingdon Community School is a lead partner with 2 other local schools in a Teaching School, leading on the development of new teachers and CPD more widely.  The school has an outstanding record for the quality of its training for all staff, regardless of their experience, and takes pride in developing its staff as outstanding teachers and preparing them for the next step in their career.  Training opportunities are extensive and all staff are engaged in some aspect of research and development.
