Back in September 2013, adults in Eastbourne were offered the chance to take part in free educational classes, including English and Maths, in a bid to improve their skills and better their job prospects. The classes cost participants nothing and can be used as a way of boosting confidence and potentially a start towards obtaining a GCSE in that subject.
Often job applications expect a high number of skills to even be considered for a position. By offering free classes in core subjects, the college in Eastbourne is helping locals to improve their basic education. The free classes take place at Sussex Downs College on both the Eastbourne and Newhaven sites.
Both English and Maths are vital skills to have in everyday life and are essential when applying for jobs. The free classes will help a number of people their skills both in everyday life but also in more focused situations, such as applying for that dream job. The classes allow individuals to work at a suitable pace for their own abilities, and they are taught in a relaxed and comfortable environment without any pressure. However, should individuals wish to pursue a qualification in a subject, then the support is on offer to help them succeed.
The college also runs classes in English for Speakers of Other Languages, to help improve English skills in everyday life and work situations. These classes are also set in low pressured and friendly environments, and free to anyone who is receiving job seekers benefit.
